This Associate Curator role within the M+ Design and Architecture curatorial team aims to have a strong focus on providing research support for the department. The role will develop research to articulate how design objects connect with M+’s curatorial vision and key narratives relevant to exhibitions, publications, and public programmes; and produce interpretive content that engages the museum’s diverse publics.

The Associate Curator will conduct research on works in the M+ Collections, potential acquisitions, as well as for exhibitions and publications. They will work closely with the Lead Curator and Curators in the Design and Architecture team, as well as with colleagues across the Learning and Interpretation, Digital, Collections, and Conservation teams to shape the presentations of Design and Architecture works at M+, including collection works, commissions, and loans.

You will be responsible for

  • facilitating new and ongoing research on Design and Architecture works in the M+ Collections, as well as loaned works, to develop interpretive materials for exhibitions, publications, or/and other public programmes with a focus on Design and Architecture;
  • contributing to the development of the museum’s collections of Design and Architecture through deepening research and documentation of existing collections, potential acquisitions, and when necessary, supervise curatorial assistants in this work;
  • maintaining accurate records of objects in the museum collections by working closely with colleagues across Curatorial, Exhibitions, Conservation and Registration. This includes writing work descriptions and updating records to reflect standardised terminology and formats for exhibitions, publications, and online content using current best scholarly practices;
  • organising meetings in relation to curatorial planning and strategic development with other curatorial teams and relevant external parties;
  • sharing and applying research findings across the Curatorial, Learning and Interpretation, and Digital teams that could contribute to content creation, planning and reporting activities; and
  • assisting with planning and coordination of exhibitions and other public programmes with a focus on Design and Architecture, and working with other curatorial teams when required.

You should

  • possess a recognised university degree (preferably a master's degree) in fields related to history, design, architecture, and/or cultural studies;
  • have 6-9 years of experience in conducting research, writing, and editing in Design and Architecture-related programmes, publications, and exhibitions contexts, and applying new knowledge to develop interpretive content that engages the public;
  • have sophisticated research skills, with excellent oral and written communication skills in English and preferably Chinese; proficiency in another Asian language is highly desired;
  • strong interpersonal skills with and proven ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of collaborators and audiences;
  • showcase an excellent knowledge of the histories and current state of design and/or architecture in Asia, with an active area in a developed subject and interest;
  • attention to detail, strong organisational and data/file management skills;
  • ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with respect to time management, setting priorities and meeting deadlines; and
  • demonstrate experience of working in a museum setting or a large-scale cultural organisation with an international scope.
