Gen Z Prefers AI For Career Advice Over Their Own Manager

Date

Artificial intelligence, particularly tools like ChatGPT, is rapidly reshaping the modern workplace. For Gen Z, however, AI isn't just a tool; it's becoming a trusted collaborator and even a confidante.

This and more have been uncovered by a recent Resume.org survey of 8,647 full-time U.S. workers, highlighting this significant trend.

More Than Just Work Help

51% of Gen Z views ChatGPT as a "coworker" or "assistant." This goes beyond basic tasks. Over 60% of Gen Zers have personal conversations with ChatGPT, a stark contrast to older generations. They also see AI as a source of entertainment (36%), a companion (32%), or even a therapist (21%). This suggests AI is filling a support gap for younger workers.

AI Over Managers for Advice

This reliance extends to professional guidance. Roughly 40% of all employees prefer ChatGPT over their managers for work questions, a figure that jumps to nearly 49% among Gen Z.

Why the Shift?

Gen Z, having grown up with instant information, favors AI's quick, unbiased answers. They find it a more efficient and comfortable alternative to approaching supervisors, especially in remote or high-pressure settings.

The Future Workplace

As AI continues to integrate into our daily lives, understanding Gen Z's unique relationship with these tools will be crucial for companies aiming to build effective and supportive future workplaces.
