Gen Z Is Turning Away From Traditional Management Roles

Date

Over half of Gen-Z professionals are not interested in middle management positions.

While 36% anticipate they might have to take such roles at some point, 16% are committed to avoiding them altogether. Research from Robert Walters highlights this trend, revealing that 72% of Gen-Z would prefer an individual career path focused on personal development rather than managing others.

Moreover, 69% of Gen-Z view middle management as high-stress and low-reward. In contrast, 89% of employers still believe middle managers are essential to their organizations. A significant 63% of professionals feel that older generations value middle management far more than younger workers do, with only 20% believing it is equally valued across ages.

This shift in perspective comes amid recent job cuts in major U.S. companies, where middle management roles accounted for 30%, marking a broader trend known as the “great unbossing.”
