Optician / Optical Lab Specialist (Finishing Lab Setup & Operations)

About Us We are an independent eyewear brand expanding operations by setting up a finishing-only optical lab in Los Angeles. This lab will support our retail stores and e-commerce operations by edging, blocking, and finishing lenses into frames. We’re seeking an experienced optician with strong lab knowledge to help design, set up, and manage the lab workflow.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning and setup of finishing lab (equipment selection, vendor relationships, layout, workflow).
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain finishing lab equipment (patternless edger, tracer/blocker, lensometer, tinting units if applicable).
• Perform edging, blocking, drilling, mounting, and quality inspections of lenses.
• Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab processes.
• Ensure compliance with ANSI standards and California regulations for optical dispensing.
• Troubleshoot machinery and coordinate service/maintenance with vendors.
• Maintain organized inventory of lenses, consumables, and lab supplies.

Qualifications

• 2+ years experience as an optician or optical lab technician, with direct finishing/edging experience required.
• Strong understanding of optics, lens types, coatings, and ANSI tolerances.
• Experience in lab setup or workflow optimization is highly preferred.
• Hands-on ability to operate patternless edgers, blockers, and related lab tools.
• Licensed Dispensing Optician in California or ABO certification required.
• Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and build processes from scratch.

Bonus Points

• Previous experience opening or managing an optical lab.
• Knowledge of both retail workflow and wholesale finishing processes.
• Familiarity with maintenance
