You will be responsible for

  • Installing, packing / unpacking, transporting, and storing artwork and objects across M+ sites and external commercial storage facilities to international conservation best practice standards;
  • participating in the safe handling of a variety of works of art and objects and installing them to museum standard;
  • adhering to the principles and practices of Safety Health and Environment practices in accordance with the WKCDA policies, as well as complying with manual handling guidelines, including the operation of the fork-lifts, scissor lifts and other tools and equipment necessary to carry out duties;
  • carrying out risk assessments and reviewing of safe working methods in relation to installation, workshop, and storage practices;
  • inspecting works of art prior to handling and reporting any damage to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the Registrar and the relevant Conservator;
  • keeping up to date with international museum best practice methods and procedures for art handling by liaising with colleagues and external professional colleagues and bodies;
  • ensuring equipment is maintained in a serviceable order and conducting regular inventories of tool trollies and packing materials and report any equipment problems or supply requirements to the Lead Technician or Managers of Installations and Displays;
  • performing other job duties as assigned.

You should

  • possess at least 5 subjects at Level 2 / Grade D or above in the HKDSEE / HKCEE or equivalent academic qualification; OR applicants with a recognized university degree in fine art, design, engineering, or trade based background;
  • have at least 3 years of relevant working experience in a museum, gallery, or fine arts logistics/ art handling company;
  • have good understanding in installing paintings, handling, and moving furniture or fragile objects, sculpture and 2D art;
  • have experience in packing and unpacking artwork and fragile objects, moving crates, pallets and soft packed artwork safely with the common equipment, pallet jacks, trollies, furniture dollies, etc; experience with heavy object lifting, rigging, hoisting is preferred;
  • have experience using museum or gallery collection management systems is an advantage;
  • knowledge in mount or crate making and general construction knowledge is desirable;
  • have sound knowledge of the principles and practices of Risk Management, Health & Safety and Manual Handling;
  • possess forklift licence, scissor lift operating ticket, driving license or silver or green card is an advantage;
  • be confident to convey ideas and information via written communications in a clear and concise manner and able to establish and maintain relationships with people at all levels;
  • be able to liaise with stakeholders, use analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems, identify and propose workable solutions to problems with creative ideas;
  • be proficient in both written and spoken English and Chinese; and
  • candidates with less experience may be considered for the position of Assistant Art Technician.
