Sustainable Designer (Redressing the Lion Dance)
CALL FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGNERS
Redressing the Lion Dance 2025
OVERVIEW
Redress is excited to announce a unique opportunity for sustainable fashion designers in Hong Kong to join an innovative project merging the city’s intangible cultural heritage with fashion sustainability. The initiative focuses on creating a pair of lion dance showpieces made from upcycled textiles, to spark reflection on the issue of fashion waste whilst celebrating Hong Kong’s rich cultural tradition.
Ha Kwok Cheung Dragon and Lion Dance Team, a longstanding dragon and lion dance company with 90+ years of history in Hong Kong, has partnered with us to further the exchange of knowledge and experience between design creatives and lion dance experts, ensuring the project output is an authentic representation of Lion Dance and its cultural significance.
This project is also rooted in community and industry engagement, creating space for designers to engage with fashion professionals, students, and the general public through project workshops, as well as pop-up retail and exhibition opportunities, depending on candidate eligibility.
Find out more by signing up for our cultural workshop in partnership with the Ha Kwok Cheung Dragon and Lion Dance Team on 13th August 2025 at 2 - 4 PM. SIGN UP HERE!
THE OPPORTUNITIES
We invite local fashion designers, especially those with a focus on sustainability, to express their interest in the following:
a. Lion Dance Showpiece Design, Exhibition and Student Engagement (Aug-Nov 2025)
Design and co-create one of two upcycled lion dance showpieces, reflecting your creative vision while incorporating sustainable practices. 75% of your final showpiece must be sourced and reimagined from unwearable clothing collected through Redress’ Takeback Programme.
The selected designers will be expected to deliver 1-2 student workshops as part of the project; this can be to support the construction of the showpiece or as a sub-activity. There is no age or experience limit; all are welcome to apply. You must be available to work on the project between September and November and will be paid a set fee for the development and production of your showpiece.
b. Brand Retail Pop-up (Late November/Dec 2025)
Join a 6-day retail pop-up alongside other sustainable fashion brands as part of Hong Kong Fashion Fest activities and benefit from reaching new audiences.
We will exhibit the lion dance showpieces as part of the pop-up store, and designers selected for this pop-up will be invited to showcase, alongside their current sustainable collections, a product that resonates with or is inspired by the upcycled lion dance showpieces. This can be something from their current collection or a new product.
The retail opportunity is open to select candidates with a sustainable fashion brand.
c. Consumer Workshop Facilitation (Late November/Dec 2025)
During the designer retail pop-up, select designers will be invited to run workshop activities for the public to learn creative skills, such as mending and customizing, to empower the public to keep clothing in use longer.
- If selected, designers will be remunerated for their time to run the workshops.
All above opportunities will require selected designers to participate in filming (on agreed-upon dates) of any relevant content as part of this project’s marketing and documentation.
