Sustainable Designer (Redressing the Lion Dance)
Redress is excited to announce a unique opportunity for sustainable fashion designers in Hong Kong to join an innovative project merging the city’s intangible cultural heritage with fashion sustainability. The initiative focuses on creating a pair of lion dance showpieces made from upcycled textiles, to spark reflection on the issue of fashion waste whilst celebrating Hong Kong’s rich cultural tradition.
Ha Kwok Cheung Dragon and Lion Dance Team, a longstanding dragon and lion dance company with 90+ years of history in Hong Kong, has partnered with us to further the exchange of knowledge and experience between design creatives and lion dance experts, ensuring the project output is an authentic representation of Lion Dance and its cultural significance.
This project is also rooted in community and industry engagement, creating space for designers to engage with fashion professionals, students, and the general public through project workshops, as well as pop-up retail and exhibition opportunities, depending on candidate eligibility.
To express interest in any of the below opportunities, please email liondance@redress.com.hk for details on application timeline and requirements!
THE OPPORTUNITIES
We invite local fashion designers, especially those with a focus on sustainability, to express their interest in the following:
Brand retail pop-up (late November/Dec 2025)
Selected designers will join a 6-day retail pop-up activation alongside other sustainable fashion brands as part of Hong Kong Fashion Fest activities in late November / early December, and reach new audiences for your sustainable fashion brand. There is no fee for participation, for the selected designers.
The pop-up will feature the upcycled lion dance showpiece(s), and designers who are selected to participate will be invited to showcase, alongside their current sustainable collections, a product that is inspired by its message, cultural heritage or aesthetic. This can be something that exists in their current collection or they may produce something new.
The retail opportunity is open to candidates with a sustainable fashion brand.
Consumer workshop facilitation (late November/Dec 2025)
During the designer retail pop-up and exhibition in November, select designers will be invited to run workshop activities for the public to learn creative skills and be accessible to beginners, such as mending and customising, to empower the public to keep clothing in use longer.
If selected, designers will be remunerated for their time to run the workshops.
- All above opportunities will require the selected designers to participate in the photography and filming of content as part of this project’s marketing and documentation.
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
• Passion for sustainability and innovative design. • Experience in fashion design. • In-person availability in November/December. • Excellent project- and time-management ability. • Ability to communicate well with diverse audiences. • Commitment to preserving Hong Kong’s cultural heritage. • Collaborative spirit.
